Who are we? And why should you use our products?

My name is Sol, this is my wife Tannia, and welcome to our first-ever blog post (so please forgive me if it reads a bit like an incoherent mess!). We’re just your average UK couple—juggling the house, jobs, kids, cars, and, of course, the endless bills.

But things weren’t always this way. Fifteen years ago, you would have found me clean-shaven with a classic corporate 'short back and sides' haircut. I had a demanding professional career that practically forced that look. Like many guys, whenever the Christmas shutdown rolled around, I’d put down the razor to see how long I could grow my beard before heading back to the office. I always absolutely hated the sensation of shaving, and I hated watching my hair fall to the barber's floor.

The keen-eyed among you will notice from our photos that we are Sikh. For us, maintaining a beard and wearing a turban to protect our long hair is a core part of our identity, heritage, and who we are.

For a long time, the corporate world took over. But I finally reached my breaking point the day my young daughter looked at my computer and called the laptop 'daddy.' That was the moment everything changed. I left the corporate grind behind to reclaim my time, my family, and my identity. And that journey of reclaiming who I am—combined with a lifelong respect for hair and grooming—is exactly how the seeds for King of Beards were planted

Heritage

Now, to be clear, this isn't a religious blog. But here is why our background matters to your beard: as Sikhs, our identity is deeply tied to our hair, which we never cut. We’ve been living this way for hundreds of years. Because of that, looking after our hair and beards isn't a passing trend for us—it’s a major part of our daily life, our history, and our culture.

That history comes with a lot of 'passed-down' knowledge. Like many young Sikhs growing up, I remember my Gran making her own homemade oil for our hair. When I finally decided to sit down and create the base formulas for King of Beards, it was her traditional methods that I leaned on.

Of course, the spark to actually turn this into a business came from a familiar place: being stuck at a day job. Like anyone else, once I get bored at work, my brain starts pinging with a million different ideas. Trust me, if I had a pound for every business idea I’ve come up with during a slow workday, I’d be pretty well-off by now! But this idea was different. This one had history behind it.

Science

Alright, I reckon I’ve spoken about myself enough for now! So, we had the idea, and then we actioned it. Well... not quite. Enter Tannia.

Normally, my wife isn't entirely on board with my random, fast-firing ideas. She knows me too well, and she knows what's actually realistic. But surprisingly, she was 100% on board with this one. Tannia is sensible, educated, and measured—essentially the exact opposite of me! She also happens to have a degree in pharmacology. And guess what? That helps a lot when you're creating a premium grooming range.

While I’m busy dreaming up new scent profiles and product ideas, Tannia is the one looking at the actual formulation science. She ensures everything is completely safe, calculates the precise ingredient quantities, and figures out exactly how the natural components interact. Essentially, she’s the glue holding this whole operation together (and yes, I’m definitely banking some major husband brownie points with that line!)

The early days

Why?

So, that’s us—me, Tannia, and a bit of our history. I’m going to save the deep dive into our specific product line for another day, but I will tell you what finally sparked the fire. As I grew into my identity and let my beard grow, I naturally gravitated toward the high-street giants looking for grooming products.

And frankly, I was disappointed. I found myself constantly thinking: 'I can’t even smell this oil,' 'Why is this making my face so greasy and shiny?' and 'What actually are all these chemical ingredients?' > I knew we could do better. So, we gave it a go. We set out to create products using raw, natural ingredients that are fast-absorbing, packed with carrier oils that genuinely benefit both the hair and the skin underneath, and finished with some very different, distinct scent profiles..

Conclusion

At the end of the day, King of Beards isn’t just a business for us. It was a challenge. It was born from need, fuelled by heritage, and backed by science. Sure, I’d love for this to eventually free us from 'the system' (don't even get me started on that!), but for right now, this is our growing baby.

There is a lot more to come from the kingdom, and we’re incredibly excited to have you along for the ride.

Welcome to the family. Explore the range at www.kingofbeards.uk.".
